Glam in the rain! Lupita Nyong'o, Amy Adams and Naomi Watts spirits aren't dampened as they lead early arrivals on the 'wet' carpet at drizzly Oscars
By IONA KIRBY
It is the biggest night of the year for Hollywood stars, but the rain threatened the designer gowns on the red carpet at Sunday's Academy Awards.
As Los Angeles experienced another downpour amid some of the worst rain its had in years, staff at the Dolby Theater rushed to mop up water and cover statues with plastic sheets.
Luckily, many of Hollywood's leading ladies looked unfazed by the drizzly weather with Amy Adams looking chic in a navy blue strapless Gucci gown and Lupita Nyong'o in a baby blue plunging Prada fairytale number.

Glam in the rain! Nominees Lupita Nyong'o and Amy Adams were fashion triumphs in Prada and Gucci while Naomi Watts looked stunning in white as they arrived on the red carpet at the Oscars in Hollywood on Sunday
Naomi Watts was also an early standout in her stunning beaded white gown and geometric silver necklace.
Lupita, who has become a firm fashion favourite over award season, said she chose the gown as it reminded her of her native Kenya.
'This is Prada and it was made for me,' she told E!'s Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. 'It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi.
The 31-year-old actress is nominated for her role as Patsey in Steve McQueen movie 12 Years A Slave in her first major role after acting school.
'I've just felt so blessed that my first job after schhool had got me so much recognition,' she told Seacrest. 'I didn't grow up watching the Oscars but it's something I came to understand what a big deal it was when I was in college.'
Fashion star of the season: Lupita told E! that she chose the pale blue colour as it reminded her of Nairobi
Svelte and sophisticated: Amy said the dress 'felt like me' when it came to choosing the gown
Dazzling: Cate Blanchett arrived in her favourite designer Armani with a nude gown with silver beaded detail
Pleased to see you: Cate greeted Blue Jasmine nominated co-star Sally Hawkins on the carpet
Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett, who has so far cleaned up over awards season, dazzled in a nude fairytale Giorgio Armani Prive gown with silver beading detail. 'It's heavy but I love it,' she said.
And as if hinting that she was looking forward to what has been a long award season, she told E! 'I hope my wheels are on tonight because it's a long way until the end of the carpet.'
She was spotted greeting her Blue Jasmine co-star Sally Hawkins, who arrived in an intricately beaded Valentino gown.
Pregnant Olivia Wilde looking sophisticated in a black Valentino gown and chic updo and Kristen Bell sporting a lacy fairytale white strapless gown.
Portia de Rossi was on hand to support wife - Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres- and arrived in a stunning cream dress with cut out patterns while Kristen Chenoweth dazzled in gold.
Back to black: Charlize Theron looked dramatic in her black fishtail gown with diamond jewels
Stunning: Olivia Wilde and Kristen Bell lead the early arrivals at The Dolby Theatre at the Oscars on Sunday
Glamming up: Portia de Rossi sported a stunning cream dress with cut out patterns, Kristen Chenoweth dazzled in gold, Viola Davis looked ultra glamorous in turquoise and Robin Roberts wore a pretty lilac gown with beaded detail at the Oscars in Hollywood on Sunday
And Giuliana Rancic and Kelly Osbourne, who as hosts for E!, weren't precious at the prospect of getting wet and arrived armed with umbrellas to combat the wet weather.
They were also joined by Ireland Baldwin, who has been tasked with hosting the red carpet segment for Entertainment Tonight.
The trio of presenters all opted for fairytale inspired gowns for the huge event, with Ireland in a red wine coloured lacy number by Burberry with a split up one side.
The model daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger wore her platinum blonde locks in a boho updo, and also sported nude lipstick and gold strappy sandals.
Once upon a time: (L-R) Ireland Baldwin, Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic looked like they'd just stepped out of story books on the Academy Awards red carpet in Hollywood on Sunday
Raindrops keep falling on my head: Kelly and Giuliana, who are the hosts of Fashion Police, arrived armed with umbrellas to ensure their dresses stayed dry
Showing off her slimline shape: Kelly looked lovely in a white dress that would have been simple if it wasn't teamed with a gold lace bolero
Not letting it rain on her parade: Giuliana wasn't about to let the bad weather dampen her good mood
Do the Angelina: Ireland and Nancy O'Dell flashed some leg in their split dresses while posing with Joe Zee
Hello down there: Kelly and co-host Ross Matthews waved from the shelter of a balcony
Ireland, 18, showed no signs of nerves despite the daunting evening ahead of her.
Meanwhile, Kelly showed off her slimline figure in a simple white gown by Badgley Mischka with an elegant twist in the form of a gold lace bolero with some sparkling silver detailing.
Giuliana went for a very feminine look in a puffy cream dress with a lace bodice by Paolo Sebastian, which she teamed with a ballerina style bun.
Prepared for anything: Some women stood under umbrellas outside the Dolby Theater, while one had a plastic gown under the train of her gown
And... action: Organisers scrambled to unveil the red carpet at the last minute after keeping protective cover on it during the heavy Los Angeles downpours
It's showtime: Special plastic covering was taken off the Oscar statues lining the red carpet just before the big arrivals
Making sure its fit for an A-lister: A staff member was seen vacuuming the carpet ahead of the huge event
Shining bright: As people flocked to the Dolby Theatre, one organiser frantically cleaned the stage with a tea towel on his feet
Meanwhile Maria Menounos proved what a red carpet pro she is as she arrived in a dazzling white gown, which was backless but otherwise modest and also boasted striking embellished shoulders.
All four stars managed to succeed in looking fantastic without threatening to draw attention away from those nominated, who would be showing up later while sporting more dramatic looks.
It came as organisers scrambled to protect the carpet from the rain, waiting until the last possible moment to unwrap the statues and unveil the carpet, with several umbrellas still on hand for the remaining drizzle.
Time is running out!: The stage was polished to perfection as quickly as possible after the rain calmed down
Not so glamorous now: The Oscar statues had to be wrapped up safely after some of the worst rain Los Angeles has had in years
Greek goddess: Maria Menounos looked absolutely beautiful in her embellished backless white gown
What's going on here?: Maria and her Extra co-host Mario Lopez got photobombed by a pregnant Barbie while clutching their microphones
Firm friends: Maria posed with Michael Strahan who is the host of Live! With Kelly And Michael
While host Seth MacFarlane set many a tongue wagging last year, the show is in safer hands this time around with Ellen DeGeneres acting as ringmaster for the evening.
The favourites in the Best Actor and Actress and Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories include Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong'o and Jared Leto.
But the night's biggest question mark won't come until the very end as 12 Years A Slave, Gravity and American Hustle compete for the most coveted award of all in the form of Best Picture.
True gems: (L-R) Shaun Robinson, Brooke Anderson and Louise Roe all sported jewel tone gowns
Golden duo: Johnny Weir (L) and Tara Lipinski are hosting for Access Hollywood following their amazing Olympic coverage
It's a tough job but someone's got to do it: Ryan Seacrest no doubt was delighted to walk the red carpet alongside a host of glamorous women, including 2007's Miss USA Rachel Smith
