There aren't many men who can pull off a plaid suit.

But with the world at his feet following his Best Actor Oscar win this year, Eddie Redmayne can do no wrong.

The 33-year-old actor looked very festive in his red checked suit as he arrived at the London premiere of The Danish Girl on Tuesday night.

The London-born actor was joined by his wife, finance PR Hannah Bagshawe, who opted for a daring black sheer gown.

Eddie was greeted by hundreds of screaming fans as he arrived at the Odeon Leicester Square for the premiere of his new film.

Also in attendance was his leading lady Alicia Vikander, who showed off her slim figure in a navy dress with satin skirt and bejewelled corset.

The film stars Eddie as real-life transgender pioneer Lili Elbe, who in 1931 became the first person to undergo sex-reassignment surgery.

Lili was a Danish transgender woman who was born as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener.

An artist, she stopped painting after her reassignment surgery, severing all ties to her former identity as Einar.

Born in 1882, Lili underwent four operations beginning in 1930. She passed away in 1931 three months after her final surgery.

The Danish Girl is based on the book by David Ebershoff, in turn inspired by real life events.

The film reunites Eddie with Les Mis director Tom Hooper and stars Swedish actress Alicia as Lili's wife Gertrude.

Speaking to reporters on the red carpet, Eddie said: 'Getting to play her was one of the most wonderful presents,

'I just thought her and Gerda's story - I couldn't believe I hadn't heard it before. I thought it was one of the great love stories of the 21st century, it was the most wonderful experience getting to play her.

'The whole film has been just a wonderful education for me and I've learned a huge amount.'

In a recent interview, Eddie spoke about the challenges of playing Lili: 'It leaves you feeling very exposed and vulnerable'

In a recent interview with The Sun, Eddie spoke about the challenges of playing Lili: 'It leaves you feeling very exposed and vulnerable. The set itself felt very safe when I would be walking around as Lili but there was still this sense of people watching you and feeling judged.

'Imagine what it must be like for trans women who are constantly facing such judgment as well as discrimination and violence in many cases.'

Also at the premiere was director Tom and castmembers Sebastian Koch, Matthias Schoenaerts and Emerald Fennell.

The actor and PR executive tied the knot at Babington House in Somerset after getting engaged that summer.

The couple had dated for around two years before Eddie proposed.

The Danish Girl is out now in US cinemas and is released in the UK on 1 January 2016.
