Kate Winslet, Eddie Redmayne and Idris Elba lead British Golden Globes 2016 nominations... as singer Sam Smith receives surprise nod
This year’s award season proved to be hugely popular among the Brits, and it appears as if there could be a repeat triumph for the stars once again in 2016.
Acclaimed names such as Kate Winslet, Dame Helen Mirren, Eddie Redmayne and Idris Elba all received Golden Globes nominations on Thursday afternoon, while Sam Smith was given a surprise nod for his hit track Writing’s On The Wall.
Oscar-winner Eddie, who swept the board during the last awards season for his role in The Theory Of Everything, has been nominated for Best Actor for his role as transgender artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl.

He will compete against Irish actor Michael Fassbender, who was nominated for his titular role in Steve Jobs and Bryan Cranston, who received a nod for his portrayal of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo.
Other contenders include Will Smith, who won plaudits for his role in Concussion, and Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in the highly anticipate revenge epic The Revenant.
For Best Actress, Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has been recognised for her role as a homesick immigrant in Brooklyn.

She faces stiff competition in the form of Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room and Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back.
Elsewhere, Mirren and Winslet will go up against each other in the Best Actress in a supporting role, Motion Picture category for their turn in Trumbo and Steve Jobs, respectively.
They will compete against the likes of Jane Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alicia Vinkander.
British actors Idris and Mark Rylance also scored nominations for their work in both film and television and will compete against each other in two categories.

They scored nominations for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role in a motion picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
Elba received the nod for his terrifying depiction of Commandant in Netflix drama Beasts of No Nation, while Rylance was nominated for his performance in Steven Spielberg's espionage thriller Bridge of Spies.
Both Idris and Rylance will compete for the Best TV Actor gong against fellow Brit David Oyelowo for his role in Nightingale.
Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt - who won best supporting actress for her role as loyal lady's maid Anna Bates last year - has been nominated for Best Actress in TV.
While her co-star Maggie Smith has received a nod for Best Actress, Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy, for her stint in Lady in the Van.

British film-maker Ridley Scott has been recognised for best director for his sci-fi blockbuster The Martian.
The awards are an accolade bestowed by 93 member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for film and television, both in foreign and domestic markets.
It has been held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel since 1961, and will be broadcast live on NBC this coming year from the same location on January 10, 2016 with Ricky Gervais acting as host.
