Doing it for his Homeland! Damian Lewis leads the way for British winners at the Golden Globes

  • Homeland scooped Best Actor, Actress and Best Series prizes
  • Maggie Smith took home Best Supporting Actress for Downton Abbey
  • Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Lincoln

Damian Lewis led the way for British winners at the Golden Globe awards when he took home the Best Actor in a TV Drama prize for his role in Homeland.
The 41-year-old actor, who plays Congressman Nicholas Brody in the Showtime series, beat Mad Men's Jon Hamm, Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, Jeff Daniels for The Newsroom and Steve Buscemi for Boardwalk Empire to take home the prestigious award.

Looking smart in his tuxedo, Damian made an emotional speech paying tribute to his late mother Charlotte as he accepted his award in front of the star-studded crowd.

He said: 'I want to dedicate this to my Mum, who is up there somewhere looking down and bursting with pride.'
Damian also thanked his wife Helen McCrory for her support.
Earlier in the evening, the pair made a glamorous red carpet arrival for the event, with Helen looking incredible in a pale grey strapless dress.

Damian later credited the rest of the show's cast and crew for it's success, adding: 'Of course the best journeys are always shared so I would like to share this with the best TV cast and crew working today.'
As well as taking Damian taking Best Actor, Homeland took home Best Drama Series and Best Actress in a TV Drama for Claire Danes, who plays CIA Agent Carrie Mathison in the show.
At the Fox after-party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel following the ceremony, Damian marked his success by showing off his Gangnam Style moves when Psy's hit song was played.

Handing his globe to Helen, Damian grabbed Jackson Pace, who plays his on-screen son Chris Brody, telling him: 'We're on. Okay, let's do it!'
Damian and Jackson then lined up and performed the Gangnam moves perfectly, with the actor moving as if he had the nimble tread of Fred Astaire.
And while Helen jokingly pleaded with the actor to stop, Damian hadn't run out of dance moves, and jived to tracks including Rock Around the Clock and Rockin' Robin as he and Helen moved on to the Weinstein Company after-party at Trader Vics.
He said: 'I could rock into the dawn but I think I'd better stop!'

Damian wasn't the only British winner of the evening, however, as Dame Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis and Adele also took home awards.
Maggie, who did not attend the ceremony, was crowned Best Supporting Actress, Series, Miniseries or TV Movie for her role as Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, beating Hayden Panettiere for Nashville, Sofia Vergara for Modern Family, Archie Panjabi for The Good Wife and Sarah Paulson for Game Change.
Meanwhile, Day-Lewis looks increasingly likely to take home the Academy Award for his role in Lincoln next month, after winning the Golden Globe for the movie.

As well as Day-Lewis' prize, Lincoln was presented the Best Picture prize by a very special guest in the form of former US President Bill Clinton, who was given a standing ovation as he made his surprise appearance on stage.
And despite knowing about Clinton's involvement ahead of the ceremony, Day-Lewis admitted he was still awe-struck by his speech.
He said: 'Even knowing it, it was still amazing to hear him. I haven't had a chance to find a corner somewhere and just reflect on that moment when he spoke about our film, and I was very honoured to have a conversation with him afterwards and to hear his thoughts about the man about his achievements.'

Adele was another British winner at the star-studded event, taking home the Best Original Song award for her Bond theme Skyfall.
Looking sleek in a black Burberry dress, Adele dedicated her award to her baby son, but declined to reveal the little boy's name.
However, she did tell reporters backstage: 'I feel a bit over-excited; it's my first night out since having my child!'
