Quitting Downton terrified me... but thank heavens I'm out of those corsets! Jessica Brown Findlay breathes easy in new Hollywood role
She is known as the beautiful and feisty Lady Sybil Crawley, but actress Jessica Brown Findlay has revealed she is delighted to be free of the stays and corsetry of Downton Abbey.
Having opted to leave the hit drama after two years, Jessica, 24, is now starring in Hollywood romance A New York Winter’s Tale alongside Russell Crowe.
She plays a free-spirited but consumptive heiress who falls for a mysterious thief played by Colin Farrell.

Floating free: Jessica Brown Findlay as a scruffy heiress in her new film, A New York Winter's Tale
‘Although the period is similar to Downton, the story is very different,’ said Jessica.
‘I had a great time making it. Best of all was that the character is scruffy and free and wears clothes which are loose and comfortable, so I could float around in cottons and didn’t have to get into a corset.’
Ironically, given the pain of corsetry, she explains her decision to leave by saying: ‘I wasn’t ready to get comfy.
‘I loved playing Lady Sybil but I desperately wanted to try new things. The idea of leaving scared me more than anything I could think of – which motivated me to want to do it even more.’
