Ellie Goulding takes home Best Solo Artist gong in sheer polka-dot dress as David Bowie misses out at Q Awards despite six nominations
By HANNA FLINT
Ellie Goulding scored sartorial points at the Q Awards on Monday, arriving in a sheer, layered polka-dot dress to Grosvenor House Hotel.
And clearly it was a winning outfit as she took home the Best Solo Artist gong - presented to her by Tinie Tempah - and beat the likes of David Bowie Jake Bugg, John Grant and Laura Marling in the readers' vote.
It wasn't however the only disappointment for Bowie - the rock legend missed out entirely despite being nominated for a total of six awards.

Bowie, 66, was tipped to win a number of awards following his surprise comeback at the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile Ellie wasn't the only female popstar making an impression, as Pixie Lott turned up in gingham high-waisted trousers and a leather crop top.
Also in attendance was Sophie Ellis Bextor, who took a break from Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals with Brendan Cole, to watch the awards in a magenta vintage lace dress.
Sophie was invited to present one of the many accolades at the music event, as was Ronnie Wood, Example, Wretch 32, Icona Pop, Dizzee Rascal and John Niven.
Q Idol winner Robbie Williams showed off his new streaky 'do when he collected his award before presenting the Outstanding Contribution to Music trophy to the Pet Shop Boys.

Also there to enjoy the musical event were Theo Hutchcraft from Hurts, Eliza Doolittle, Laura Whitmore, Stooshe, and nominee Tom Odell.

Commenting on this year’s awards, Q’s senior editor Matt Mason said: 'It's been a privilege to celebrate another brilliant year for music. We keep being told that these are tough times for the industry, but the evidence here suggests the opposite.
'The artists honoured today reflect the variety and richness of the current musical landscape. From Jake Bugg to John Cooper Clarke, they give us everything we ask for from rock and pop stars: outstanding, inventive music delivered with absorbing attitude and character.
'We’re particularly delighted to salute evergreen artists such as Robbie, the Pet Shop Boys and Suede, who’ve all made excellent new music over the last 12 months. They’re brilliant reminders of the enduring power of the great British pop act – anyone who saw Suede’s thrilling Q Awards show at the Garage last week will agree with that.'
Host: Al Murray was the award's master of ceremonies, which had James Arthur in the audience
Nominee: Tom Odell was nominated for Best New Act at this year's ceremony
