The music megastar was presented with the Icon Award on Sunday night by her visibly emotional mother, Monica Braithwaite.
Handing over the gong, the retired Afro-Guyanese accountant said: 'Rihanna, I'm so proud of you tonight.
'I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud you and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused.

Offering the crowd a stirring performance of her hit track, Diamonds, Rihanna then accepted an additional award for Favourite R&B/Soul Artist.

The six-time Grammy winner looked gorgeous as she accepted her eighth AMA statuette from Zoe Saldana and Marc Anthony, telling the audience: 'I want to thank [CEO of Universal Music Group] Lucian Grainge, Jay Brown, Jay-Z, Tata [Young], my Roc Nation family.
'I really, really want to thank my family for always being there for me. Thank you for being in the house tonight on such a special night. My friends!
'But most of all my fans, this is for you guys! You guys made this happen and I love you, thank you so much!'
