It’s been a long time coming – and, some might say, something the X Factor desperately needs.
Cheryl Cole is being lined up to make a spectacular X Factor judging return – alongside her one-time mentor turned nemesis Simon Cowell.
It’s a huge turnaround after the formerly good pals’ relationship fell apart when the Girls Aloud singer, 30, was sacked from the US version of the show back in 2011.
But after patching up their differences the pair are now speaking regularly and the X Factor supremo considers her part of his latest master plan to turn the revamped 2014 series into the best yet.
A TV insider tells me: “Simon wants Cheryl to join him on the judging panel again. He regards the two of them as the dream team.
“The years they did the show together were hugely successful and Simon thinks that they could have an amazing comeback together.” The X Factor’s ratings are currently suffering with BBC1 rival Strictly Come Dancing pulling in significantly more viewers for the Saturday live shows.

And now Simon’s apparently ready to do whatever it takes to regain the top spot.
Adds my source: “Simon has always been incredibly fond of Cheryl. Crucially, she also attracts headlines and will get people talking about the X Factor again.
“It’s still very early days though, so nothing is set in stone.
“At the moment talks are ongoing while Simon focuses on the remainder of the year.”
Cheryl has been taking some time out since performing in the Girls Aloud farewell tour earlier this year. Apart from getting a rose bum tattoo, she’s also split from her boyfriend of 14 months, 28-year-old dancer Tre Holloway, with the couple struggling to make their transatlantic relationship work.
After dropping his favourite protegee from the US show – and replacing her with Nicole Scherzinger – Simon attempted to defend his decision by claiming Cheryl had looked “bewildered”.

He added, with all the sensitivity of an angry rhino: “I took the view, along with a few other people, that she’d have been more comfortable back in the UK.”
Not surprisingly Cheryl turned down Simon’s offer to return to the UK panel in 2011 – and the pair didn’t speak for months.
Earlier this year it was reported that Cheryl was suing Simon for a cool £3.5million over the sacking. But it is now understood that the pair are settling out of court (with the sweetener of a nice, juicy
X Factor contract, perhaps?)
Cheryl wrote in her autobiography My Story that when Si failed to give her a heads-up that she was going to lose her job she sent him a ranting text ending with the words “I hate you”.
But last June she hinted she might consider working with the old devil again, saying “never say never”.
