Their faces are so familiar you have to remind yourself they were youngsters once. Now, a photographic archive has shed light on the early days of celebrities. Off-guard moments, opportunistic snapshots and iconic scenes from TV shows are in a new book of pictures — including some they might like to forget — taken for the Radio Times.

Surprise, surprise: Down-to-earth Cilla Black gets on with the washing-up in this early Seventies photo. Still in her 30s, Cilla had transformed herself from a Merseybeat pop singer to the TV star we know today. Is that one of her own songs she’s turning up?
