Karen Gillan fails to win over US audiences as her sitcom Selfie is cancelled due to low ratings

Guess it didn't get enough likes! Karen Gillan fails to win over US audiences as her sitcom Selfie is cancelled due to low ratings

She is already a known name in America thanks to her roles in Doctor Who and Guardians Of The Galaxy but Karen Gillan failed to captivate audiences across the pond with her comedy show, Selfie.
Deadline reports that the American television network, ABC, has cancelled the half-hour sitcom after it pulled in underwhelming ratings.
While critics were impressed by the performance given by Karen, the show opened to mixed reviews as audiences failed to show interest in the weeks that followed.

The network had already order the first 13 episodes of the comedy show and it is thought that they will continue to be aired on Tuesday nights but they have announced that they will not be ordering any additional episodes.
Karen and the rest of the cast had just been celebrating the show’s first People’s Choice Awards nomation.
The show is up against Cristela, A to Z, Blackish, Jane The Virgin, Bad Judge, Marry Me, The McCarthy’s and Mulaney for the Favourite New TV Comedy gong.

News of the show’s cancellation has not come as a huge surprise after it was agreed by critics that the show was 'vapid' and 'poorly written', thought the 26-year-old British's star has been praised for her 'charisma, charm and near-faultless American accent'.
Using a similar plot to Pygmalion and My Fair Lady, the series follows the life of Eliza Dooley, a modern day version of Eliza Doolittle.
She is obsessed with becoming famous through selfies and Instagram until she realises that she needs real-life friends rather than online ones.

After the humiliating breakup of her relationship is made public, Eliza finds that she has more online followers that she ever imagined but for all the wrong reasons.
This prompts marketing guru Henry Higenbottam (a modern day version of Henry Higgins, played by John Cho), to decide to help her transform her image.
Britain's Daily Telegraph blasted the show as unfunny and questioned the decision to make the selfie obsessed star a woman.
Rauncy: Karen certainly wasn't shy of stripping off for the series

The publication said: 'Apart from being neither funny nor trenchant, there was also something slightly worrying about the vapid numbskull forever glued to her phone being a woman.'
While Variety acknowledged problems with the show, it went on to praise both Karen and her leading man John Cho.
'So much of this show is completely darling; Gillan, working with a mostly good American accent, has so much charisma and charm, she's almost able to endear Eliza to us. Cho is a natural romantic lead (quick, someone tell Hollywood), and the two of them together have a fun opposites-attract vibe,' the website stated.
Unlikely pair: John Cho's Henry Higenbottam (a modern day version of Henry Higgins,) decide to help Eliza transform her image and the pair have been praised for their chemisty

EW's critic admitted she is 'not necessarily sure if the show can be salvaged' and also blasted the 'concept that a female character has to be fixed by a man even if she’s doing so voluntarily'.
However, while acknowledging some problems, the Hollywood Reporter was hopeful it can improve.
The industry bible wrote of its hope that 'despite its cloying introduction to the world, it could just be a problematic pilot and will emerge, in another episode or three, as something that realises its potential'.
And the Boston Globe worries that just the first few minutes could turn viewers off for good.
It wrote: 'Both the title and the first few minutes of Selfie nearly ruin what could turn out to be a charming show.'
Embarrassing: Critics and viewers were grossed out by a scene where Eliza vomits into a bag and then spills it all over herself

Bad timing: Only a day ago, Karen was sharing her joy with fans on Instagram as she wrote, 'Yay!! Guardians of the Galaxy AND Selfie are up for People's choice awards, thanks for voting; here is happy face!!!'
